英文摘要 Very little attention has been paid to the subject of WHY mankind has chosen to record his knowledge. Much has been said on the HOW's from primitive fossil etchings to the latest in video-disc. But the question of WHY record knowledge at all remains systematically untreated. Inferences and deductions from historical recording formats lead us to conclude that while technology has advanced the art of record keeping, the purposes underlying the process have remained essentially the same, namely to commemorate, to communicate, to pray, to calculate, to measure, and to preserve.
