英文摘要 Public Libraries in the United States represent the ideal and the real. The former represents goals which are always pursued and the latter practice which must be followed lest nihilism result. Thus, the Peterborough and the Boston Athenaeum regarded themselves as the pinnacles of education along the thought of Holmes that the nest that hatches scholars is the library. Practicality, however, revealed that pubIic Iibraries were for all people, not just scholars. This involved an attack upon racism which is being won and the realization that the handicapped were people who happened to have an adjective before the name. These factors resulted in the adjustment of libraries for the accomodation of all, the expansion of services within the library, and the extension of its facilities outside the building. In this way, the real is realized and the ideal is still pursued.
